Roughly fifty vehicles have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to authorities.

Automobiles, walls and postboxes were marked, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they reported in a statement.

Officers report they were contacted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.

The liquid had been drawn in the pattern of a swastika, they added.

Police then found many other marked vehicles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

Swastikas are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.

Police report early analysis show the substance was most likely human blood.

"At present there remains no lead as to its origin; officials are currently not aware of any injuries in connection with the event," they commented.

Local authorities stated they were attempting "to unravel the case" and have requested to the community for information.

A senior representative said the attack left him stunned and required to be addressed promptly.

"This act affects the center of Hanau and reopens the pain of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he stated on social media, mentioning the killing of nine individuals by a shooter focusing on individuals of foreign heritage in 2020.
