England along with Wales Drawn Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was conducted by rugby icons such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England and Wales will face off in the same pool for the World Cup in 2027, setting up a major early encounter in Australia. They are joined in Group F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw echoes their famous clash in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' shock early exit.

Key Group Draws

The Irish alongside Scotland have likewise been drawn in a group once again, replicating the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, Ireland claimed a convincing victory, with Scotland unable to progress to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Portugal, who each made a strong impression as underdogs in the last World Cup, complete that same group.

Significantly, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from holders and world number one the Springboks until the final, assuming the Springboks top their assigned pool.

Knockout Implications

If the groups play out in line with the current global standings, other leading contenders like New Zealand and France would remain separated from the likes of England and Ireland until the final.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the remaining top-ranked nation on the same side of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts the Wallabies find themselves together with their great rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Pool A.

Australia will open the World Cup in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster fixture designed to launch the event.

In other groups, holders the Springboks have drawn Italy, Georgia and Romania. France are in a pool with Japan, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Los Leones and Canada as the World Cup grows to twenty-four nations from the twenty who competed in France.

This edition will introduce a last-16 round for the very first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

While the victor of Pool F may avoid some of the game's heavyweights early on, they will meet the runner-up from Pool B – probably Italy – in the first knockout round.

Four of the other six pool winners will face a third-placed side from the pool stages.
