New research indicates that people who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People using such medications need to be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Accounts
People who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful return of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you become extremely hungry," described a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
