Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the option to question particular decisions from the official, mirroring the practice currently in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

Case in Point

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
